Slice of Heaven: Slice 9 – Smiling Eyes

I have to say, there is a difference when a person smiles with their eyes.  It’s especially true for children.  They tell so much in their eyes it’s amazing.  Every Sunday at the end of Church I make a point to go pick up my little girl from her classroom as soon as I can get there.  I love looking through the little window and seeing where she is and what’s she’d doing as they play and have fun, hoping she won’t spot me as I peer in while her little class is going on.  The very best part is when I get there to pick her up.  I usually open the door and can see her look up to see who it is… then I say “Where’s my little baby bear?” and just then she realizes that its her Daddy and she smiles the biggest smile and runs as fast as her chubby little legs will carry her.  I’m always squatting down with my arms open wide and by the time she gets to me she’s worked up such a head of steam that she hits me full force and buries her head in my chest.  I pick her up and swing her onto my hip and say “Hey baby girl! Let’s go find Mommy.”  The thing  I love the most is her eyes.  When I enter the room, just like the other parents, she doesn’t know at first who it is.  There are a lot of kids in there and because I’m far away from her classroom she’s usually one of the last 2 or 3 remaining.  As she hears my voice and realizes it’s her Dad, she has a distinct brightness in her eyes and they just glow with excitement, anticipation, happiness, and pure joy.  I don’t exaggerate… I’ve seen it myself every Sunday since she started going to her little class and I believe that it’s in those moments I can see the pure love of God.  There isn’t much right with the world, but once a week, for a fraction of a second, I get a glimpse of what heaven must be like… and I love it!   Yep, that’s my slice of heaven today, and every Sunday.
